TOEFL is offered in two formats: an Internet-Based Test (iBT) and a Paper-Based Test (PBT) (PBT). TOEFL scores are accepted by more than 11,000 universities in 150 countries for admissions. Since 1964, the Educational Testing Service (ETS) has designed and administered TOEFL, one of the most extensively used language competence examinations. Most institutions in the United States, as well as many universities across the world, recognize TOEFL results as proof of English language proficiency. ETS, the same organization that administers the GRE, manages and administers the TOEFL. Since its inception in 1964, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) has been the most widely used English proficiency test.
